What is computer based testing?

What is Pearson VUE?
Pearson VUE is the electronic testing business of Pearson Education. This is the organization through which MRA, Inc. administers computer based tests. For more information, go to www.pearsonVUE.com.

What are test centers?
Test centers are locations across the country where candidates may take tests. There are 200 Pearson Professional Test Centers strategically located around the country. These centers are ergonomically designed to facilitate concentration for test taking.

Are test centers quiet and comfortable?
Yes. The Pearson Professional Test Centers are designed to facilitate a comfortable and quiet environment conducive to test taking. All equipment is provided and staff members are available to assist candidates at any time.

Where can I take the examination?
There are approximately 200 Pearson Professional Test Centers strategically located across the country where computer based tests can be taken.

Are international testing sites available?
Yes, PearsonVUE has testing sites that meet the same standards for comfort and security as US sites in the major European and Asian countries.

Is there any difference in candidate performance on written and computer based tests?
No. Many studies have shown that there is no significant difference in candidate scores when taking a written or computer based test.

Will the computer based test follow the same content guidelines?
Yes. The computer based test, fixed form or adaptive, will follow the same content guidelines as the paper and pencil test. The content guidelines are determined by the Board.

How long is the computer based test?
The computer based test is generally the same length as the written examination. Consult the Board for details on test length.

Are computer based tests secure?
Yes. The extensive computerized encryption systems make breaking into the test virtually impossible. Also, test centers make it very difficult for candidates to carry in unauthorized notes, or to make notes about questions to carry out.

Scheduling a Testing Appointment
Must I schedule an appointment to take a computer based test?
Yes. Candidates will be taking their tests in different test centers across the country during the period of time the examination is administered. You are required to schedule an appointment to take the test. You should schedule your appointment as far in advance of the test as your Board will allow. Appointments are scheduled on a first come, first served basis.

Does my application process need to be complete, with all fees paid, before I can schedule a testing appointment?
Yes. You must have met all requirements and pay all Board fees before you can schedule a testing appointment.

When should I schedule a testing appointment?
You should schedule your appointment as far in advance of the test as your Board will allow. Testing appointments are scheduled on a “first come, first served” basis. Therefore, to insure getting an appointment at the testing center of your choice, you should schedule your appointment as early as possible.

How do I schedule a testing appointment?
You may make a testing appointment via the Web or by telephone. On the Web, go to www.PearsonVUE.com. On the left, under "Select Your Category," click on "Health, Medicine, Pharmacy & Nurse Aide." Select your testing program for information, including how to set up a Web account. To register online, you must first create a Web account. To register by telephone, you may make an appointment by calling 1-877-392-3926.

Will I receive an email confirming the testing appointment?
Yes. You will receive a confirmation email from Pearson VUE stating the date, time, and location of your appointment. If you have been granted a disability accommodation, it will also be noted in the email.

Should I bring the confirmation email to the testing appointment?
Yes. You should bring the confirmation email to your scheduled testing appointment, along with two forms of identification, one with photo identification.

How do I cancel a testing appointment?
You must cancel or change a testing appointment at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled appointment. You can cancel the appointment on the Web at www.PearsonVUE.com or by calling 877-392-3926. Failure to cancel a testing appointment results in a “no show” without a refund of testing fees.

Taking the Computer Based Test
How do I record responses on a computer based test?
Responses to questions may be entered into the computer in either of two ways. You may enter responses by “clicking” on the response you believe to be the correct answer or typing in the letter of the response. Responses are recorded directly into the computer.

Can I review responses when taking a computer based test?
Yes. You may review and alter responses after they have been entered into the computer during the examination or after you have attempted to answer all of the questions.

Can I skip questions and answer them later?
Yes. In fixed form computer based testing you can skip questions and return to answer them later. It is in the best interest of the candidate to attempt responses for all questions.

Can I bring food into the test center?
No. Food is not allowed in the test center.

Can I bring note paper into the testing area?
No. The computer test center will provide a whiteboard and erasable marker which must be turned in at the end of the test. You may also make electronic notes about questions.

Can I bring a calculator into the testing area?
No. A calculator will be provided.

How do I end the test?
When you have answered and reviewed all of the questions, you may click the “END” button. Another box will ask you to confirm that you are ready to end the test. Once you confirm that you want to end, the test will close and you will not be able to re-gain entry. This sequence will occur at the end of each section of the test.

Can I return to a test section once I have ended?
No. Once you have ended and confirmed that you want to end a section of the test you cannot re-enter that section.

What is the break policy?
Candidates may leave the room as needed during a testing period. However, to regain entry, their biometrics will be verified. For tests that have more than one section, candidates are encouraged to take a 30- to 60-minute break after the first section is completed.

Can I practice taking the computer based test before the actual administration?
Yes, you can practice taking the test as often as you wish by downloading the Computer Based Testing Tutorial.

Will there be visuals on the computer based test?
That depends upon the test being taken. If visuals contribute to the test, they will be shown on the screen with the text of the questions or in a separate window.

Will I get my test scores at the test center when I complete the test?
No. The Board will mail your test results as soon as possible after the completion of the testing period.

Is knowledge of computer programming necessary to take a test on the computer?
No. The test administration program requires candidates to be able to use the mouse or keyboard to answer questions. Exhibits and visuals are easy to access.

How early should I arrive at the test center?
You should arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the scheduled testing appointment. This will allow time for proper check in and verification of identification.

What type of identification must I present at the test center?
The candidate must have two forms of identification At least one form of identification must have a picture of the candidate on it. The candidate is required to bring the test confirmation letter from Pearson VUE, and it is recommended that the candidate bring his/her letter from the Board.

What if I am late for the testing appointment?
You must arrive within 15 minutes of the scheduled testing appointment time. If you arrive later than 15 minutes, you may not be able to take the test. Center proctors will make every effort to accommodate a late candidate, but this may not be possible given the testing schedule for the day.

What accommodations can be made if I have a disability?
It depends on the nature of the disability. However, a private room is available at many test centers. It is possible to arrange for readers or other personal assistance as needed. All disability accommodations must be approved by the Board prior to making a testing appointment. The test center cannot provide an accommodation that has not be approved.
